Out with Bob, In with Joe

In New Hampshire, one can buy 1 lb. superfine but unblanched almond meal for $3.69 at Trader Joe's. Beats $10+ for the Red Mill stuff. Is there a better deal?

Wow, what a difference! That's awesome. Do you like almond butter too? My mom swears by the stuff.

I've cooked with the TJ's unblanched almond flour and really don't like it. There is a reason for blanching - the outer skin is bitter. Nothing I made with this flour turned out satisfactorily.

Hi, Elise - Thanks for popping in! Your site has been a reliable resource for me this holiday season. Dad's Fudge is to-die-for!

I'm sorry to hear that you did not have success with Joe's almond meal. I, and many of my readers, cannot consume sugar, starch and grains for medical reasons; lots of us have other allergies and intolerance to compound this restriction. In most cases we must use specially developed SCD™ recipes, rather than traditional baking formulae. I submit that there are probably applications (and cook/consumer preference) for a moist, dense bleached almond meal, but with limited options, my staple Muffins are best with TJ's almonds!
