Getting Started

GETTING STARTED with SCD™

When another woman in my family was diagnosed with dysbiosis and her doctor recommended SCD, I pulled together these tips* and sent along a care package to help with the first few days.

My initial reaction to SCD is not uncommon; it's depressing when all you hear is "no, no, no - you can't have—" But soon, your body will say "yes," (or maybe "thank you") and life will start to balance.

THINK:
Natural. Simple. Fresh. You may need to shop more frequently to maintain these qualities in your new diet.

SHOP NOW:
Eggs
Block cheese (if Dairy is OK)
1.5 lb. Ground beef
3 lb. Boneless chicken breast
Almonds
Pecans
Walnuts
Mint or herbal tea
Olive oil
Red or white vinegar (not balsamic)
LÄRABAR (pecan, cashew, cherry, ginger) or Date rolls
Apples or apple sauce
Blue-, straw- and raspberries
Green onions
Lettuce
Tomato
Snap peas
Carrots
Broccoli

PREPARE YOUR FOOD
Take a day or a weekend to toss together some salad with grilled chicken and sautéed chicken and vegetables. Hamburgers can be fried up when you need protein but nuts aren't doing the trick. Apples are juicy pick-me-ups. Berries are good with your breakfast eggs, as are LÄRABAR or date rolls.

The shopping list above will provide you with something to eat for the next few days, as you do your research and accept the reality that you are about to feel much better.

PREPARE YOURSELF
Start with Breaking the Vicious Cycle; the book and the Web site. The links in the header of my site provide easy access to alphabetical groupings of Legal/Illegal foods. Then check out all of the great links at SCDiet.org and SCDRecipe.com.

Take your time to decide whether you want to do homemade yogurt, DCCC, and almond flour baking. Feel better soon!
